The 2016 Senior Championship Final was held on Sunday 10th July between George Lunan, who was chasing his first Renton Bc senior championship title and Holder Charlie Cassidy who was looking for a record equalling fifth senior championship.
Senior Section Match Secretary Arthur O’Hare welcomed both players and congratulated them on getting to the final.
Senior Section President John Gillies who was present to mark the tie was asked to draw a rink after both players failed to agree a rink and John drew out rink 4.
Charlie had the better of the early exchanges leading 4-1 but George rallied to lead 11-6 before Charlie dug in to get it to 14-14, they then exchanged doubles to make it 16-16 then Charlie got two singles to take a narrow lead 18-16. George replied with a single to reduce the lead to one shot.
At 18-17 to Charlie , George had the last bowl and had a shot on to either chap and lie the winner for four or trail the jack a yard for four, he missed narrowly and Charlie then led 19-17.
Next end Charlie’s first two bowls were within a foot of the jack and George narrowly failed to get the shot with his second bowl.
After a loose bowl by either player, Charlie then covered the back as George was left with one bowl to save the game.
George played weight into the head and moved the jack to lie one shot and more importantly save the game.
Next end Charlie’s third bowl landed on top of the jack for the shot after a wee ‘glide’ off the high bowl of George’s.
George failed to change the head leaving Charlie a draw for the game, Charlie changed his hand and failed to count. So Charlie took a 20-18 lead into the next end.
Georges second finished within four inches of the jack but Charlie came down with his third bowl and changed places with George’s bowl and looked like he has played the match winner.
George was forced into changing his hand and he played the perfect bowl by trailing the jack for three and more importantly a match lie.
Charlie then was forced to play weight at the head, he made contact and put the jack on the string to lie the match but left George with two yards to save the game, which he did.
At the next end Charlie’s second bowl lay within 18inches of the jack for shot after failing with his third bowl George then played his last bowl and played the perfect chap and lie on Charlie’s shot bowl to lie two shots he required for the win.
With Charlie facing game against for second time he failed with his last delivery thus leaving George the two shots needed for a 21-20 win and the title after a pulsating contest which was enjoyed by the assembled crowd.
Both players and officials retired to the committee room for some well earned refreshments.
George will now represent Renton in the DDSBA Champion of Champions.
