DBA West v DBA East Friendly
Willie Cavan Trophy
On Saturday 26th April, the Club held the seventh annual Willie Cavan Trophy. 24 players took to the green in a ‘triples’ format, playing four games of five ends.
After the sectional games the four highest teams progressing to the semi-finals were as follows:
Team | Points | Shots |
1. Davie Lang (s), John Murphy & John Holland | 8 | +13 |
2. Michael Cavan (s), Stevie McGowan & Bobby Campbell | 7 | +13 |
3. Billy Hogg (s), Brian McNeil & Matt Morrow/Micky Haggerty ** | 5 | -6 |
4. John Brodie (s), Frank McCallion & Arthur O’Hare | 4 | +8 |
** Matt Morrow played the first three sectional games. Micky Haggerty played the remaining three games.
Billy Hogg’s triple had a comfortable 5-1 victory over the previously unbeaten Davie Lang in the first semi-final. The other semi-final was a much tighter affair with John Brodie’s triple edging out Michael Cavan by a single shot.
An excellent final was tied at 2-2 after three ends and 3-3 after five. The extra and deciding end was a nail-biting affair with the jack moving several times. However, Brad played a cool draw under pressure to win the cup with a 4-3 victory. It was redemption for Brad having lost by 31 shots the previous night in the Ken McKenzie Cup.
Michael Cavan presents the trophy to the winning triple of Frank McCallion, John Brodie (s) & Arthur O’Hare.
Ken McKenzie Cup
28 members took to the green last night in miserable, wet conditions for our first trophy of the season, the Ken McKenzie Cup. After 17 ends of play the Cup was presented to the winning triple of Charlie Cassidy (s), Michael Cassidy & Duncan Ballantyne. Michael and Dunky had never won this cup before and Charlie last won it 30 years ago!
They finished a remarkable 31 shots up, winning the first 15 ends. To protect their dignity the website won’t name the losing triple, although it was made up of three highly experienced bowlers, all of whom have previously won the Ken McKenzie Cup! (Hint: check the names on the trophy in 2012, 2010, 2005, 2002, 2001, 1986, 1984)
It was great to see several new (and relatively new) members – Andrew Baird, Stevie Connolly, Dave Gordon, Scott Mitchell – take part in the competition, plus the welcome return of Frank Gale. Hopefully the weather will be better next time they play the Friday night rinks.

Opening Day 2014
Our season got underway on Saturday 5th April under mixed weather conditions for the opening of the green, performed by the President’s wife Catherine Murphy.
President John Murphy introduced his green party – John Gillies (DBA), Billy Neeson (DAC), Frank McCarry (Honorary President), Drew Atkinson (Vice-President), Billy Murray Snr (Past President), Matt Morrow (Seniors’ President) and Kirsteen Gillies (Ladies’ President) – to the assembled members and thanked the invited guests for joining us on our opening day.
With the formalities completed Catherine delivered the first jack and two bowls of season 2014 to a round of applause from everyone present before officially opening the green and wishing Renton Bowling Club every success for the coming year.
Catherine was presented with flowers and a small gift by her nieces and nephew – Eilidh, Cara and Owen – on behalf of the Club as a token of our appreciation.
A full green of members and invited guests then took to the green for six ends of play – a shortened game to protect the green and a reflection of the cold weather and drizzles. A bottle of whisky was up for grabs for the first toucher of the day, and this was won by Richard Murphy, the President’s brother, playing only his second game of bowls in 30 years! Richard continued this success by being part of the highest up triple along with Stevie McArdle and Jim Daly (skip). The winning triple received bottles donated by Honorary President, Frank McCarry.
After the bowls the invited guests, members and their families retired to the hall for a buffet prepared by Margaret Stewart’s team. Afterwards, an enjoyable time was had in the members’ lounge where a karaoke machine had been set up, with a sing song late into the night .
